Responsible for infusing the visitor experience with learning opportunities and helping college students, K-12 students, visitors, and supporters connect with the garden. Develop engaging and exciting interpretive signage, exhibits, events, webpages, and service learning opportunities. Assess educational and interpretive materials and make them visible to the Smith College community and the public. Communicate with stakeholders through the Friends of the Botanic Garden biannual newsletter, brochures, social media posts, events calendars, and press releases. Serve a leadership role in the Botanic Garden by mentoring students, serving on committees, interacting with donors and supporters, and contributing to strategic planning and prioritization.
Bring the collections, gardens, landscape, and history to life for K-12 school groups, visitors, and students through curriculum enhancement grants, interpretive signage, brochures, web content, tours, presentations, and other formats. Showcase exciting, timely, and thought-provoking exhibits. Plan, develop, design, and fabricate new exhibits to premiere at Lyman Plant House and to subsequently travel. Identify, procure, modify, and install exhibits from other institutions. Advertise, coordinate, and evaluate the impact of events including the annual Spring Bulb and Fall Chrysanthemum Shows. Write and circulate press releases. Advertise events and opportunities through various outlets including the Botanic Garden website, posters, email, videos, and newsletters. Update community events calendars and College calendars. Ensure that events and activities are scheduled at opportune times.
Grow the Friends of the Botanic Garden network through promotions, solicitations, and mailings. Coordinate activities and strategies with other Smith College Friends groups. Assist with Friends Advisory Committee meetings, donor events, alumni programs, reunion/commencement events, and other special events. Assist in fundraising and identifying fundraising opportunities through correspondence and alumni events. Speak with Smith clubs and promote ongoing initiatives and events. Manage the volunteer program. Recruit, screen, train, and assess volunteers. Ensure that volunteers are properly thanked and acknowledged for their service. Produce the biannual Botanic Garden News newsletter. Manage publication timelines. Solicit and edit articles from staff, students, and other authors. Establish and protect Botanic Garden branding standards.
Mentor and supervise students through internships, work study, special studies, and class projects. Manage off campus internships including assisting interns working abroad with travel preparations and visas. Coordinate the curriculum enhancement program. Promote the program and work with faculty to develop innovative course content in collaboration with Botanic Garden staff.
Contribute to department leadership by serving on departmental and interdepartmental committees. Assist with the development, planning, and implementation of new programs and strategic priorities. Connect the Botanic Garden to other institutions through collaborations, professional networks, and mutually beneficial projects.
Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in botany, horticulture, biology, landscape studies, or a related field with three years relevant experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Experience representing an organization to the public and teaching in informal settings required. Master’s degree preferred.
Skills: Excellent organizational skills and written/verbal communication skills. Excellent computer and graphic design skills with experience developing web pages, brochures, signs, interpretive panels, and exhibits. Plant identification skills, as well as knowledge of botany, biogeography, and economic botany.
Mostly office work with the ability to lift 20 pounds and the occasional need to install exhibits using of ladders and hand tools.
Normal hiring range for the position will be between $46,705 to $59,000, and will commensurate with experience. Priority deadline to apply is by April 30, 2018.
