This position will run June 4, 2018 through August 24, 2018, and pay $12 per hour.

Nestled in the Southern Appalachian Mountains just south of Asheville, The North Carolina Arboretum offers acres of cultivated gardens and groomed trails featuring some of the most beautiful, botanically-diverse plants in the region.

Youth Education at The North Carolina Arboretum delivers educational experiences that create a purposeful, engaging and experiential approach to science and outdoor education. It is the mission of Youth Education to provide every student with:

Adventure: Enjoyable, physically active, healthy experiences that get young people moving, outdoors and immersed in the unique natural heritage of our biologically diverse region.

Exploration: Hands-on investigations that challenge youth to make observations, examine data and draw conclusions about the natural world of which they are a part.

Awareness: Learning experiences that foster an environmental consciousness in youth that will aid in shaping their personal and professional life.

The Arboretum utilizes this approach to cultivate students who value natural resources, learn how to recognize their impact on the world around them and are equipped with the skill, knowledge and ability to achieve in the 21st century fields of sustainability, conservation and environmental sciences.

Duties & Responsibilities 

This position will focus on assisting Youth Education staff daily with outdoor focused camp programming for grades Pre K through 8th. This role will also include preparing and maintaining environmental education program materials, participating on individual work teams for a variety of subjects, assisting with Eco Lab classroom operations and maintenance as well as other job-related tasks as required.

Education and Experience 

Minimum of a high school diploma is required. Any combination of education or experience equaling a degree in teaching/education, childhood development, outdoor education, biology, ecology or a related field.

Possession of a valid driver’s license is required and applicants being considered must agree to a background check.

Physically, this work requires long hours of leading programs in the out of doors in various weather conditions, often times carrying a pack with program equipment.

Youth leadership experience and good customer service skills are required; Experience working with children in an outdoor setting is strongly desired; Ability to work unsupervised and to display flexibility in an ever-changing environment; Applicants are strongly encouraged to review the Arboretum’s website prior to interview and be prepared for a skills assessment.
