The Horticulturist will be responsible for beautifying and maintaining the landscape and garden areas by working directly with the garden crew in various hands on activities. This position reports to the Horticultural Supervisor.
Assist with the supervision of the garden crew, work with them on a daily basis and provide training in proper horticultural techniques.
Perform general gardening duties such as pruning, planting, weeding, mulching and debris removal, as well as other required tasks within assigned environs.
Participate in researching and selecting new plant material, installing accession tags, inventorying beds, documenting associated database information, etc.
Lead tours, provide demonstrations and answer questions from garden guests and staff on horticulture matters. Assist in weekly garden task scheduling and planning.
Monitor and inspect plants for health deficiencies and problems, ascertain proper corrective measures and apply appropriate pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers in accordance with Moore Farms Botanical Gardens IPM practices.
Assist with designing new garden areas.
Work with contractors, consultants and temporary employees, aid in supervision and training of interns.
With managerial approval, source, procure and purchase plants, supplies and materials such as trees, shrubs, seeds, mulch, soil and garden tools and equipment.
Operate backhoes, tractors, trucks, forklifts and other heavy machinery. Also operate standard garden equipment such as chainsaws, blowers, mowers and tillers and perform heavy lifting as required.
Other duties as assigned.
Ability to lift 75 lbs.
Willingness and ability to perform physical work outside in all weather conditions.
Ability to carry, climb, push, stoop, reach, dig and to load and unload various objects.
Ability to operate various power tools and heavy equipment.
Must possess a valid South Carolina Driver’s license and South Carolina Pesticide Applicator’s license; or have the ability to obtain these upon employment.
The majority of time will be spent working outside in the garden, though some office work is also required.
Summers are hot and humid with exposure to biting insects and poison ivy.
Compensation: This is a full time non-exempt position with a competitive salary commensurate with experience.

Moore Farms Botanical Garden is a nonprofit organization set on over 500 acres near Lake City, South Carolina. The garden is cultivated on 65 acres and is a dynamic mix of formal, naturalistic, and agrarian landscapes. Garden areas include a formal garden, vegetable garden, green roof, pond gardens, formal shrub borders, and a greenhouse and nursery. Other land use includes agriculture, forestry and wildlife habitat. We are currently in a period of growth in both our horticultural displays and programming. Associateʼs or Bachelorʼs degree in Horticulture, Botany, or related field, as well as, previous professional experience in the field of horticulture. Preferred experience will amount to 2-3 years or equivalent internships.
